KATMANDU AND BEYOND
October 2008 ;-With Lyn Yoeman and Micheal Nootebos we have been involved in a new sustainable tourism venture into the Himilayers. We have completed a 14 day adventure trip into the mountains of THE LANGTANG NATIONAL PARK
"Langtang has not only the austere beauty of ice mountains accentualted by the friendly smile of flowery meadows alive with yaks but it has the charm of reticences and the witchery of the unexpected"
2009 Chris's comments:-
In winter these people are snowed in for up to 100 days .To survive they must have food and wood for these 100 days. This is a huge task as everything has to be carried in.The winter temperatures average - 10 and it can get a lot colder in the storms. The reality is that they must be prepared for the cold or nature will take its toll.
The trip was tough.I am now 60 and I was so glad my job keeps me fit. Most days you would be tramping straight up.Each day we would climb about 1000 metres and then rest and acclimatise. As we got higher we all gasped for oxgen and it was a struggle to maintain the discipline of taking it easy, eating the right foods and resting when you needed to. I was so glad of my army training nearly 40 years ago.
The Sherpas carried our heavy 20 kg packs, as we certainly could not. We carried only food, alpine clothing and water. You quickly learn that you sure do need the electrolytes in your water and that things like ginger tea make a huge difference to your day.
The food was excellent and exactly what you need at high altitude.Breakfast was always a huge plate of porridge with lots of honey and sugar then a double egg omlette followed by heaps of ginger tea.Lunch was a vegetarian soup and a pita type bread plus ginger tea, and dinner was a small meal of a vegetarian type dishes. You went to bed with very little in your belly as you did not want to get up and go to the toilet in the freezing conditions outside.
We went to bed at around 7.30pm as there was little or no lighting. Every night we would get at least 10 hours sleep.Nightime the temperatures would drop to - 5, so you were glad to be tucked up in your sleeping bag with 4x layers of clothes on and your sherpa hat .
On our last day we flew out in a helicopter. It was an fantastic flight. What had taken 10 days of hard climbing was all over in 25 minutes.
Just an amazing adventure with amazing people"
For 2010 -This adventure is now well established and we are looking forward to a return trip into Nepal in the future. The trip is planned to suit fit people of all ages so please contact us if you are interested in supporting us.
